Each year Emerson students stand out in language competition. Middle schoolers achieve recognition for excellent performance in the National Spanish Examinations, the Concour National French Examinations, the National Latin Exam, and achieve top honors in the Japanese “Quiz Bowl.”
The world languages program increases students' understanding of people throughout the world, introduces language in practical, useful contexts, and builds a foundation for further study. Students learn through the immersion method, though grammar is also presented in English to ensure comprehension. Language instruction, which includes listening, speaking, reading, and writing, is reinforced through in-class exercises and a variety of media. Spanish is taught in grades K-1, French in grades 2-3 and Japanese in grades 4-5. Students in grades 6-8 choose one language to study among Japanese, Spanish, French or Latin.
