Social Studies

The Middle School Social Studies curriculum offers creative approaches.  Newly-found and never published poems by Langston Hughes are explored immediately after their discovery, lending a currency to age-old themes of economic hardship, upheaval, and racism.  In another class, an Ellis Island simulation, complete with teacher “officials” asking questions in an unknown language, makes the challenges of immigration real.   Student essays and skits add insights and understanding.
