What year did you start at Emerson?
2024
Why did you want to work at Emerson?
I was drawn to Emerson’s commitment to a progressive, whole-child approach to education that fosters creativity, curiosity, and lifelong learning. It felt like a natural fit not only for me but for our son, Emerson. I was so excited for him to start his educational journey here just as I was returning to teaching after five years as a stay-at-home dad. Plus, the fact that Emerson shares a name with the school is a fun bonus!
What wows you about Emerson?
Emerson’s strong sense of community, emphasis on collaboration, and supportive administrative team all stand out to me.
In one word, what is your working style?
Enthusiastic
How would students describe you?
My students would describe me as fun, engaging, and supportive. They’d say I make learning enjoyable through creative projects and humor, while helping them develop practical skills.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
If I could have one superpower, I’d choose clairvoyance. The ability to see beyond the present moment could help me make better decisions and understand situations more fully.
Favorite artist or band?
I’m really into disco, classic soul and R&B, and classic rock. I enjoy listening to the Bee Gees, Bill Withers, Kool & the Gang, Paul McCartney and Wings, and the Eagles. According to Spotify, I was in the top 1% of all KC & the Sunshine Band listeners in the world!
What would surprise people about you?
People might be surprised to learn I’m a bit of a history detective as well as a former game show champion. I’ve traced my family tree back several generations. In 2022, I found a century-old portrait of a sea captain in our attic and was able to locate his closest surviving relative and mail it to him in Canada. In 2021, I competed on the Game Show Network program, “Get a Clue,” with my college friends, and we won $10,000!
What do you do when you’re not at Emerson?
When I’m not at Emerson, I enjoy tackling home improvement projects and building Legos with my son. We recently used online instructions to build a transformable Power Rangers Megazord, and we’re currently making plans to build a minifig-scale model of our house.
Who/what inspires you?
I’m inspired by Ron Berger and his approach to teaching through critique and project-based learning. I’ve experienced firsthand how his emphasis on producing high-quality student work for authentic audiences through iteration and service transforms students. By following his example, my students have published picture books, helped select their school lunch provider, and registered and informed voters ahead of local elections.
What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
My go-tos are either an Oreo Blizzard or a hot fudge sundae whenever we venture to the Dairy Queen down the street from our house. I’m also a big fan of coffee, dulce de leche, cookie dough, and gooey butter cake ice cream flavors.
If a movie were made about you, who would be cast to play you?
I’ve had people tell me I remind them of a lot of different actors—but the consensus choice would probably be Jason Schwartzman.
Favorite quote, or anything else you would like Emerson families to know about you?
“Live a creative life!” ~ Spotted on a Hobby Lobby tractor-trailer (love the quote, though it’s not an endorsement of their political advocacy)
